Simply put, the Murray Hill Long Island Railroad Station is in serious disrepair. While attention has been given to the downtown Flushing, Broadway, Auburndale and Bayside stations, all of which have been recently rehabilitated, Murray Hill remains the station with the poorest maintenance. As the only station below street level, it is even more important for the station to be rehabilitated, as poor lighting and maintenance can make a place threatening to potential customers.

At street level, there are chainlink fences surrounding the station, ugly paved over areas, and poor lighting. To get down to the platform, a passenger must navigate close to 30 steps (!); there is no elevator or escalator to help older passengers or those with disabilities.
At the platform level, the concrete forms and buttresses are crumbling, and the steel work is rusting away - again, lack of maintenance has created an ugly and potentially dangerous place to wait for a train.
As your City Councilman, improvements for the Murray Hill station that I will fight for include:
Better lighting
Rehabilitation of concrete forms and steelwork
Landscaping and beautification at street level
Handicapped accessible stairways or escalators
